thunder

do all little girls fear thunder? mine does and i did. i can mark the seconds until she is at my side when she hears it. we have been spending some side by side moments together with this rainy summer we have had. what do you fear?

ps...i am aware that is is a picture of lightning...thunder doesn't take the best pictures.

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am Your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand' (Isaiah 41:10).

CVS rain check

this was the first week that i have ever requested a rain check from CVS. i did because when i went on monday the store was already out of the school supplies that i wanted. the process was so easy and i am amazed at how it works. at my store they wrote out a rain check that was good for all of the school supplies for the week and it has no expiration date. the clerk attached the rain check to the ad for this week and she said that i could come in next week or 5 months from now and they would honor the prices and manually make the ECB machine print out the ECB's. i think that is so cool. now i don't have to rush to get to the stores for the deals if it is not something that we really need at the time. if it is something that is just free, i can get it when it is not in such high demand. i love it!

Heloise's kitchen hints

this little gem is filled with an abundance of kitchen tips that was not only practical in 1963, it is so useful now. here is your tip for the weekend:

organize your canned food shelved by color (she called it color-key) green, red, yellow, etc.. that way if you need pickles you go to the green shelf, tomatoes red, you get the gist.

have fun organizing with heloise.

this book was given to me by my husband's great aunt. she was a wonderful house wife and we miss her very much!

decorating with a can of paint

a couple of months ago i was cleaning out a cabinet and ran across a number of frames that were all different colors. they were relatively the same size but a different design. i was wanting to put up the kids pictures and didn't want to spend any money on the project. i ventured out into the garage, there is a wealth of supplies in there, a decorator's paradise. you should try it! i found a can of black spray paint and here is the end result. a few yards of ribbon and some fun decorator nails that i picked up when my favorite store closed, read about that tragedy here http://thedomesticchick.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-favorite-shop.html, the project was complete.

notice that the frames are not the same size or design but the color creates unity. try it in your own home. it is a great way to save and to reuse and to make your husband happy. no money spent except for the paint that was used. did i mention that the paint that was used for the frames was intended for use on a car project. oops :O)

do you have some old frames lying around for a project like this?

ps...you don't have to have pictures to fill the frames. make a collage on the wall with empty frames that are all the same color. gorgeous. trust me!

warning about baby carrots

i would normally not publish a chain email on the blog. but this is VERY important. we eat these all the time. do you?

snopes claims that the information is a mixture of true and false. you would think that would be better but it actually shares that they use the mixture talked about below on all processed vegetables.

The following is information from a farmer who grows and packages > > carrots for IGA, METRO, LOBLAWS,etc> > > > The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are > > made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put > > through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots - > > most people probably know this already. What you may not know and > > should know is the following: Once the carrots are cut and shaped > > into cocktail carrots they are dipped in a solution of water and > > chlorine in order to preserve them. (this is the same chlorine used > > in your pool). Since they do not have their skin or natural > > protective covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine.> > You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator > > for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is > > the chlorine which resurfaces.> > At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically > > pleasing vegetables?> > > > Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen, which causes Cancer.. I > > thought this was worth passing on. Pass it on to as many people as > > possible in hopes of informing them where these carrots come from and > > how they are processed.> > I used to buy those baby carrots for vegetable dips. I know that I > > will never buy them again!!!!> > > > > > Confirmed by Snopes.com http://www.snopes.com/food/tainted/carrots.asp

g's room redo

the boy loves green. what can i say. his room was tan because he came six weeks early and because my decorator brain was not functioning at 32 weeks of pregnancy when i decided on the original color scheme. so 3.5 years into his life here is the green room. the lighter green wall piece is a handmade original by his daddy to cover the electrical box that is in g's room. there used to be 2 doors over it, but they always looked like two doors covering an electrical circuit box. g's daddy is incredibly talented. i am so proud of him. i think it looks very vintage. still have the bed and window treatment to do. i will show you when they are done.

thoughts on greener

today i was reading one of the blogs that i really enjoy and have recently discovered. she posted some interesting information about a "green" cleaner that is very effective and thrifty. here is the information herehttp://www.thethriftymama.com/2009/07/shaklee-basic-h-2-cleaning-green-product.html. now, saying that if you have followed the domestic chick for a certain amount of time you are aware of how i feel about my squirt bottle filled with a few drops of dawn. if you are not aware, read about it here http://thedomesticchick.blogspot.com/2009/01/beautiful-bottle.html
i am going to look into this other option a little more. although i know it will not be as thrifty as the dawn, it may be more environmentally friendly and i am all about the environment. no i have not turned into a environmentalist, not that there is anything wrong with environmentalists. i just figure if i can help by throwing my paper, cans, and plastic in a special trash can and can keep the ground water cleaner by not putting chemicals in it why not? after all,

The Bible consistently teaches that God created all things by virtue of His own power and wisdom (Revelation 4:11). Everything He made was good and gave Him pleasure (Genesis 1:31). To this day His eternal power and divine nature are plainly evident in His creation (Romans 1:20).
Now if God created all things, and declared them to be ‘very good’, it stands to reason that He is concerned for their preservation. This concern is plainly expressed at various points in the Bible. For example, He commanded the people of Israel to avoid wanton destruction of fruit-bearing trees during warfare. He told them that when they besieged a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, they ‘shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an ax against them … thou shalt not cut them down’ (Deuteronomy 20:19).

paragraph above taken from this http://answersingenesis.org/creation/v15/i1/greenness.asp article, (very interesting read by the way).

have a wonderful evening. wasn't today glorious. i so enjoyed the breeze, and the birds, and my children's laughter. there is nothing like it!

free school supplies

one of the blogs that i find to be very helpful in my money saving adventure, kingdom klippers, always talks about going to CVS on Saturday night for the deals that "start" on the next day. i tried it tonight, and IT WORKED! they honored the prices and here is what i got.
my mom went with me so i was able to double the amounts that are limited per household. i ended up paying right around $2 for all of this. i used ECB's that i had leftover from previous purchases and finished the transaction with CVS giving me $30 in ECB's. basically they paid me $28 to take these school supplies off their hands. i love CVS.

free school supplies

even though we don't want to think that it is right around the corner...it is!

stockpiling this week

this week looks sparse for our needs. i really don't think that i will venture to the grocery store at all. i will need to pick up some meat for dinner but i think i will run to the meat market for that or finally look into the farms that provide the quality grass feed meats. i think that the only thing that i am going to get is the kashi soft bars at target this week for 50 cents a box. what are you prioritizing this week. i also need to find some cheap toilet paper and tissues. i am having a hard time forcing myself to buy toilet paper. i better come to grips with it or we will be in a pile of poo, literally and figuratively :)

it is quiet here

everyone in the house is asleep, including my husband who i think is suffering from exhaustion. it is a weird feeling. i was just sitting here thinking that i don't like how quiet it is. don't get me wrong i love the quiet of the night but usually b and i are up talking. this just feels a little to much like i am alone here in this house. i am not a loner. i like to have people around. oh wait, i just heard a noise. one of the kids is shuffling around in their room. still, at this hour. what in the world? false alarm. a toy shifted in the playroom. anyway, i like to have people around. it is just my nature to listen and talk and think and wonder and observe. i do these things without realizing that i am doing them. i am the type that will carry on entire conversations with myself about stain removal ( which sadly was an event today). i have been known to talk to myself in the car because the hum of the road gets on my nerves. even when i want the children to quiet themselves for a few very brief moments in the car there is some sort of noise. why is it when the noise is absent you miss it. but when it is there you think, i would love a moment of peace. there are things that i am still figuring out about myself. things that quite frankly i would have thought the contrary at certain times in my life. i even wonder if they were the opposite a few short years ago. do i change as a age? even something as significant as who i am, innately. what are the things that you are certain will be a constant in your being? what do you anticipate changing or already has?

outside nice, inside messy

i have spent the last few days in the garden most of the day. whenever i do things like this where most of my time is consumed in a certain area whether it be inside or out, the rest of the house goes to pot. 10 of the 15 beds in the garden are weeded and looking prestine if i say so myself (thanks d). however, while the children and i were outside the majority of the day someone or thing broke into our home a ransacked the entire place. i am now neck deep in cleaning mode trying to salvage what remains of a once clean and organized home :). of course, the clean and organized part is all relative. back to the job! what are you doing today? am i alone in the struggle to maintain cleanliness both inside and out?
