banana pudding

i enjoyed some delicious banana pudding this week with some friends. the recipe came from my mother-in-law (MIL) and was her mother's recipe. it is it the best pudding i have ever had. i didn't know that pudding could be made from scratch until i met my MIL. you have to try it. the effort that it takes, which is very little, is so worth the end result. i made the little banana flower using a vanilla wafer, sliced the edges of the banana pieces to make petals, and a mint sprig. wait until you are almost ready to serve the dessert to add the pretty little flower or your banana pieces will brown.

recipe:
vanilla wafers
bananas (about 3)
1 cup sugar
5 tablespoons flour
2 cups of milk
3 egg yolks
1.5 capfuls of vanilla

cook sugar, flour, and milk until thick
stir frequently and use medium heat
add the egg yolks (beat before you add)
add the vanilla while stirring in the yolks
cook an additional minute after you add the yolks

layer the dessert with the wafers first the bananas then pudding. repeat the layering until you are at the top of the dish you choose to use. i always double this recipe to make a larger dish. you will want to. trust me!

meat

many of you have asked about the meat that i purchased from a local farmer. while the convenience of the meat was excellent and the overall taste of the meat we fine, it was what i would consider a little on the "gamie" side on the taste and smell. i have been doing more research on meats and where to purchase grass fed meat because that is the best and healthiest type to eat. i have a very knowledgeable friend who also has been doing her own research and she came across this site. http://www.eatwild.com/products/index.html . the site lists many different farms that sell only grass fed animals raised using organic practices. i am going to contact a couple of the ones that are closets to me tomorrow. i will let you know prices and distances that need to be travelled to get the meat. if any of you are interested let me know.

the advantage

i have not been to the grocery store in 2 weeks. my mom picked up some milk for me yesterday. the advantage in the stockpile is that you can do this every now and then. i have not even felt the urgency to go as if i am going to miss a weekly deal (this is a huge feat for me). between the bulk produce and the buying in advance i feel very at ease with the stock in the pantry. i think that i will venture out later in the week to pick up a few deals, but if i don't make it, oh well:). this nonchalant attitude will not last long, but i am going to saddle up and ride it out as long as i can. have a wonderfully nonchalant evening! have you skipped any weeks and felt this free?

the garden makes me smile

i am a garden "newbie" this year. i can tell you that i plan on gardening the rest of my life, Lord willing. i had been a great joy this summer. our children have loved it! our friends have too! we are starting to have the fruits of our labor impact our meals. lovely spinach is coming up. strawberries, that our oldest sneaks out and eats for breakfast in the morning, and fresh herbs for mint tea, thyme for seasoning meats and vegetables and fresh basil for tomato mozzarella salad. i have taken some pictures of the garden for you to see. the raised beds are my favorite part of the garden. they are so nice to maintain and require much less work. the vegetables and fruits are thriving there. the carrots that were planted at the same time in the ground and in the raised bed are twice the size in the bed. amazing! one other little tip that i like to do is incorporate fresh herbs in my landscaping. thyme and mint are lovely ground cover and sage is a really pretty filler. basil is a nice border along walkways and parsley is a airy filler too. please feel free to offer any suggestions on gardening and i will be happy to answer and questions that i can about the lovely hobby. remember that compost pile i told you about, the dirt from it filled the raised beds. what a savings.

my new love~serviceberries

we have these 2 lovely bushes in our landscaping called service berry bushes or juneberries depending what part of the country you are from. they have been a part of our landscaping for about 7 years, and each year they flower in the spring and then berry in june. each year we have admired their beauty but not looked into the plants. well this year was different. with the economy in the gutter and our new mindset of running a "small farm" in a suburban neighborhood we looked into these little beauties. they are not only edible, they are delicious. the kids have gobbled them up the past few days at every meal and i made a pie with them last night. it is the most delicious berry pie. the berries have the best flavor. i have eaten the pie for breakfast and lunch. good thing we are about out of these berries or i would have to have some discipline where these little spheres of delectableness are concerned. you better go check your landscaping and see if you have one. and if not check your neighbors. i am sure they won't mind (hehehe).

recipe for the pie coming soon.

FYI this week

the sale: i need to know who is coming to sell and who is coming to browse and buy:). if you do not mind letting me know that would be great! i know that so far i have gymboree clothes, some other kids things, maybe some houseware items, very reduced mary kay items, and i am waiting to hear about anything else. let me know.sewing class: i have had a few people express that thursday would be better for them and i really think that doing the sale and sewing might be too much in one evening. so i am going to make the decision that sewing is on thursday. same time, same place. let me know if you can come. this week is all about reading a pattern. don't forget to stop and pick one up. simplicity is a good brand to start with.

sale and sewing start times are 7.
