outside nice, inside messy
i have spent the last few days in the garden most of the day. whenever i do things like this where most of my time is consumed in a certain area whether it be inside or out, the rest of the house goes to pot. 10 of the 15 beds in the garden are weeded and looking prestine if i say so myself (thanks d). however, while the children and i were outside the majority of the day someone or thing broke into our home a ransacked the entire place. i am now neck deep in cleaning mode trying to salvage what remains of a once clean and organized home :). of course, the clean and organized part is all relative. back to the job! what are you doing today? am i alone in the struggle to maintain cleanliness both inside and out?~type to you soon~

saturday morning cartoons VIIII
the whole notion of going green kind of cracks me up. really green means those good old fashioned ideas that our great, great grandparents used and taught their children, and then were past down until we got too good to make our own things to clean and fertilize and take care of our families. we have now figured out a way to commercialize ideas and notions that have been in practice for hundreds of years. ok enough on that tangent.here are some "green" otherwise known as your great grandmothers cleaning tips:
white vinegar will disinfect and unclog drains. mix with water and it makes a great cleaner for counter, glass, and tile.
lemon juice is a great natural odor eater and stain remover
baking soda safely can be used for scrubbing surfaces without scratching
microfiber cloths can wipe any stubborn stains without any solution added
salt breaks down stubborn baked on food
olive oil may be used as furniture polish
club soda removes stains
cornstarch picks up spills on carpet

the beautiful bottle

this little beauty is the key to saving yourself some major money for cleaning products. i have two of these that i use to clean the majority of our home. for countertops, windows, mirrors, kitchen table, and bathroom fixtures i use a mixture of dawn dishwashing liquid and water. for windows and mirrors use approximately 7 drops for a small water bottle like the picture above. for larger bottles add a little more. use the lesser amount to avoid streaking. for all of the other above surfaces i mix a little more soap to have a little more cleaning power. to disinfect, i use a bleach and water mixture in the same type of bottle. usually about 10% bleach 90% water. i use this mixture to clean toilets, kill germs, and wipe down kitchen handles and cabinet knobs. really the only other cleaning products that i use in my house are toilet bowl cleaner, and an occasional scrubbing bubbles on the bathtubs. i also have on hand some lysol for the computer keyboards, and toys after sickness.
all told i purchase 3 cleaning products. i even use the dawn and water mixture in my hardwood floor cleaner. just a few drops of dawn. not much! works like a charm and sure beats buying those expensive cleaners.
